5 Goal Setting Mistakes And How To Fix Them This 2021

Goal-setting is an extremely powerful process that will help you start the New Year with confidence and a strategy to move you forward in your business but, there’s a big BUT.. are you doing it the way it’s supposed to be?

In this episode, I’ll talk about the 5 mistakes of setting your goals for 2021 and how you can avoid them.

How do you set your goals? Do you grab a pen and paper, write a long list of goals, DONE, keep that paper, put it in the desk, and forget about it until it’s another year again, and you’re trapped in the hamster wheel of just listing a lot of goals but never making ways to accomplish them? You got it all wrong, dear.  Now, let’s review each mistake and see how we can avoid them.

1. Setting intentions instead of goals

I told so many times that I never really set intentions, I think intentions are great but what you’re doing is just a wishlist, if you don’t follow through on them. This is how newbie does goal-setting, but you’re not a newbie, you’re a professional and as a professional, you’re required to level up in every aspect of your business of your personal life, in every area of everything that you do.

You can’t do what you did last year and expect the same result; the new year demands us to level-up


 Find a goal-setting system that’s going to allow you to follow through on your goals that’s going to help you stick with what you intended to do.


2. Just setting goals

It’s not enough to just set a couple of goals that you want to achieve, whether that’s making six figures or breaking past six figures into seven and eight figures or building a team or spending more time with your family, there are so many things that you might want to accomplish in the new year. 

Listing a lot of goals in your legal pad is so outdated; you have to create a plan, a strategy, some action plan that you can follow throughout the year.


You got to check in on those goals and make sure that what you’re working on today connects with your goal for the week, and that goal for the week connects with your monthly goal and that monthly goal connects with your quarterly and your annual goals. Everything that you work on in your business has to be optimized to hit your goals.

3. Not changing your habits

Just expecting now you have goals, and you have intentions, and you’re ready to go, and you’re motivated, but you don’t change your habits, you don’t have habits that support those goals. What habits do you need to implement that support the goals you’re setting? That is what you need to figure out.


Don’t set 1000 goals, don’t set 10 goals, you probably only want three to five goals. Keep it simple and make sure that you’re implementing simple habits that will help support your goals. Remember that the more goals that you set, the more you spread yourself thin.

4. Not leveling up your environment

 The people that you associate yourself with, that’s who you will become. Remember that as a leader, as an entrepreneur, as a creator, your business will only be as successful as you are. And the more that you set up your environment to support the goals that you have, the greater your chances of success. So, I encourage you to surround yourself with people that help you think bigger, that empower you, encourage you and lift you up.


Start looking at the relationships that you need to be intentionally building in your business and in your personal life. Do you have enough supportive friends that really understand your lifestyle and what you’re trying to accomplish in life? Do your family members cheer you up? What about mentors or a community of people that uplift you?

5. Not having a personal growth plan

To reach a new level, you have to face a new devil; we all know it, right? It’s so critical that your mindset is altered when you start incorporating new habits. You systematically approach learning and growing and consuming information relevant to the business stage that you’re in right now.


Be intentional about reading the books you need to read and going through courses or working with mentors and coaches, or simply taking better care of your emotional life, your spiritual life, and your physical health.
