Kimberly Ann Jimenez,

Building an email list can be a little overwhelming, especially if you’re trying to get your first 1k email subscribers. And with so many strategies floating around, it’s hard to figure out what to work on first to make that list GROW.

So in this post, we’re going to break down 6 practical (and proven) strategies that you should be implementing today to get your first 1,000 email subscribers and beyond.

SNAG NOW! FREE List Building Checklist

Catch up on our email marketing series:

I wanted to separate the strategies in this post into two categories.

  1. Long-Term Strategies To Grow Your List On Autopilot.
  2. Short-Term Strategies So You Can Sprint &
Get To 1k+ In The Next 30 Days.

Because the long-term strategies are what you need to be implementing day in and day out consistently, these are the strategies that will help you leverage momentum and scale.

Most entrepreneurs skip the long-term stuff because, well, it’s hard to stay consistent.

But if you put in the work NOW you can get to a point where you’ve leveraged your content marketing so much that your list is growing every day whether you’re putting out new content or not.

And that’s #goals.

So long-term strategies are non-negotiable you should be implementing every single week whether you’re just starting your business OR you’ve been at it for years.

The short-term strategies, on the other hand, are going to give you those “sprints of results” that will help you see tangible progress in your business NOW.

RELATED: 5 Steps To Build Your Email List From Scratch

That’s the fun stuff that gives you instant gratification and feels soooo good to see those numbers GROW.

But remember, sprinting forever in your business is not a sustainable strategy…

…And that’s why it’s a good idea to combine both types of strategies in your business.

For example, if you’re fully focused on building your email list over a short period of time, doing one or two various strategies from each category is going to help reach your goal of 1000 subscribers a lot faster.

These strategies are the core foundation of your list-building process. We already covered that but it’s worth repeating. 😉

Creating consistent content is not only going to allow you to attract your ideal audience or your ideal subscriber, but it’s also going to build your traffic which means you’ll get more leads.

The first strategy is to start creating consistent content.

I know.

Nothing new here but hear me out.

Creating consistent content is not only going to allow you to attract your ideal audience or your ideal subscriber, but it’s also going to build your traffic and traffic means… leads!

This is the most basic step and ironically also where most entrepreneurs go DEAD WRONG.

You have to stay consistent, baby and create original content (and please make sure you’re optimizing it for SEO on Google, Pinterest & YouTube if you’re creating video.

There’s no getting around creating content consistently.

Of course, if you want a good starting point to plan & organize your content, check out this related post on creating a kick-butt content calendar.

Remember, the reason why you’re building your email list to a thousand subscribers and beyond is that you want them to turn into buyers.

You’re a business so you need clients who will pay you for our product, program, or service.

So make sure that your content is attracting the right type of customer. Let’s say you’re selling luxury handbags, you probably don’t want to create content that will only appeal to thrift shoppers.

Here are some ways to optimize your content to build your list.

1. Create long-form content

It’s great to create content on Instagram, Twitter, and/or on Facebook, but really, social media is designed to be a micro-content distribution medium.

So as an entrepreneur & content creator, you need to think long-term and that means creating long-form or macro content.

Start creating video, blog or podcast content that you own on your own platform and then leverage social media to grow your community & traffic.

Sometimes it’s overwhelming to figure out what type of long-form content you should be producing and I totally get it.

The reality is, you don’t have to be everywhere and you don’t have to do it all online to succeed.

Pick 1 macro-channel that fits your natural skills and one where your type of audience hang out.

If you’re catering to an audience of busy moms, for example, they usually don’t have a lot of time to read an entire long-form blog post but they’ll definitely listen to a podcast show especially while they’re taking their kids to school.

However, keep in mind that no matter how many moms like listening to podcasts, if YOU don’t actually like podcasting and you feel like you’re not good with audio, don’t do it.

Maybe you can pump out a blog post like it’s nothing or you’re more comfortable on camera. Play to your strenghts and you’ll be way more likely to keep at it.

2. Introduce lead magnets

Okay, here’s the juicy, strategy part.

Use your long-form content to introduce the next step in your relationship with your community. And that’s joining your email list.

A lead magnet helps you do just that.

It’s a freebie you give to your followers as a gift in exchange for their name and email.

Here are some ideas:

  • A buyers guide (if you’re in e-commerce, these are perfect).
  • 20% Off your physical product.
  • An informative mini-class.
  • A diagnostic quiz.
  • A PDF report.
  • A step-by-step checklist.
  • A time-saving template.
  • A helpful audio.

Rule of thumb: Make sure your lead magnets are so legit you could charge $10-25 for them.

Personally, I only like putting out lead magnets I feel confident charging for or are already a part of a paid offer.

So whatever you do, make sure their super valuable or no one will sign up.

The good news is, you don’t have to go crazy and create a new freebie with every blog post that you put out, but do have at least 1 solid lead magnet you can promote withing your content.

Now, let’s talk promotion.

How do you promote your lead magnets within your long-form content?

It’s not rocket-science.

You can simply talk about your lead magnet in your content and make sure you add the link to it.

For us in the company, we have an entire list building checklist we pulled from our Social List Building course within The Business Lounge and we promote it in our YouTube videos and blog posts.

This way, we’re building our email list while our subscribers get a hint of what’s waiting for them on the other side of our paid offers.

OMG, guys… I seriously can’t stress this enough.

It’s so crazy how few people talk about SEO these days. It’s not trendy or sexy but it works.

SEO is one of those fundamental aspects of growing a business online that rarely any online business owner actually gets.

Think of SEO as your secret key to visibility.

Most of us are already creating awesome content but we struggle because no one is reading or consuming it.

And if no one is consuming our content they’re probably also not buying our products…

One word.

It’s not enough to create awesome content, you also have to get that content in front of as many ideal clients as humanly possible.

And that’s where SEO comes in.

Search engines literally do all the work for you. Their entire purpose is to connect users who are looking for relevant information around specific topics in your industry and leading them to relevant content sources (like your blog, podcast or YouTube channel).

SEO is at the cornerstone of our entire organic marketing strategy (and that’s coming from someone that happily invests $1500+/day in FB Ads).

And because we write long-form blogs like this one AND relevant, searchable videos on YouTube, Google sends us lots of love in the form of ideal clients (traffic) that we turn into paying clients

If you’re already creating content consistently. That’s great!

Now it’s time to turn up the volume and start leveraging SEO to attract traffic to your website.

When you think of search engine optimization you immediately think…

But there are plenty of other places you can leverage SEO too.

Where else can you implement this strategy?

Pinterest and YouTube!

Did you know that both of those platforms are not considered social media? They’re search engine platforms.

I know… not really what most people think of when they think of Pinterest and YouTube marketing.

But it’s true.

Both of those ”social networks” send us mad traffic every single day which means more email subscribers and more customers.

So I highly recommend that you pick at least one SEO platform that you want to leverage and just go all in.

Pinterest is one of my favorite platforms for driving massive amounts of traffic to our blog for free.

What happens with Pinterest is that if you do it the right way by implementing a good SEO strategy behind your pins, they can go viral.

The same thing can happen on YouTube.

Both platforms are driven by the magic word… discoverability.

You can’t really get discovered on social media routinely unless one of your posts happens to go viral (and well, that’ rarely happens).

There’s really no reason for why you can’t drive organic traffic to your content and start growing your email list when you leverage SEO.

So get to it!

And of course, if you want to learn the step-by-step process of leveraging SEO (from Google), running a mad effective Pinterest strategy, creating YouTube videos that get FOUND and Podcasting like a Pro, you gotta get your buns inside The Business Lounge, asap.

#nobrainer #butseriouslyjoin #shamelessplug

I see so many entrepreneurs and online creators not taking advantage of this strategy.

So if you already have a website that’s maybe getting some traffic but you’re not seeing it convert in terms of email subscribers, you need to be leveraging the power of conversion optimization.

IDEA #1: Setup a pop-up lead magnet.

I know pop-ups can be intrusive and sometimes annoying, but they’re extremely effective if you give your visitors the right offer to join your list or even buy an introductory product.

You can set up a popup with a lead magnet, a coupon code if you run an eCommerce brand or some kind of report or audit if you’re a service based business.

The other thing you can do is set up sidebar ads like Dr. Axe.

If you have a blog on your website, it’s a good way of introducing people into your world and into your email list. Make sure that you have at least one opt-in form on your homepage as well.

If you don’t put these offers and opportunities in front of people, it’s going to be hard for them to go and dig through your website. You’re giving them so much more work to do and let’s be honest, not a lot of people are going to exert effort unless they’re your super fans.

Make sure that you have one or two lead magnets that are front and center on your website and that you’re constantly optimizing them for conversions.

So now let’s dive into the fun stuff.

Let’s talk about short term strategies to grow your list NOW.

These are a few key strategies that you can implement right now so you can get your first 1000 subscribers and beyond, quickly.

The first short-term strategy that I recommend you implement is leveraging other people’s audiences.

Now, hear me out, there are some pretty innovative things you can do here.

The key is to build your authority and offer value to another brand, company or influencer to get some short-term visibility.

So pitching yourself to a bigger publication as a guest blogger, or coming on someone else’s podcast or YouTube channel as a guest or even hosting your own pitch-free webinar for someone else’s platform is a fantastic idea to get more visibility.

The key here is, offering that audience a free gift in the form of a lead magnet. This way, you can totally leverage your expertise while you build your email list.

And if you run an e-com site, this can be as simple as offering an influencer an exclusive discount code to your product for them to share with their tribe.

Bonus tip for e-commerce brands… Influencer marketing is very effective. Get people to discover your products by building relationships with influencers, bloggers, YouTubers, podcasters or Instagrammers. So start reaching out to people that might be able to put your brand front and center of their audience.

This is one of the most amazing things that you can do to grow your list (if you play your cards right).

I’ve actually seen our members inside The Business Lounge do this and grow their email lists by 4,000+ subscribers in a week (but keep in mind, it takes some serious work, we’re not talking about slapping a half-baked giveaway together and turning on a magic switch).

More on that story below.

There are two key elements in running a giveaway that will increase your email list.

Number one, the prize needs to be something that your ideal client really wants.

One of our members in The Business Lounge, Brian Berni from Author’s tech, created an amazing giveaway for his community.

Brian caters to authors so his giveaway prize was an awesome keyboard that a lot of authors want.

He grew his small email list to 4,000 subscribers just by running a giveaway #likeaboss.

Number two, make sure that you’re promoting your giveaway. Social media is always a given but you can also invest in a tool that will give you massive exposure and generate a lot of buzz.

Gleam is an awesome resource for creating lots of buzz around your promotion.

You also want to create a promotional hit-list.

Meaning, a list of social media & other sites you can leverage to build lots of buzz for your giveaway.

Hey! If you’re part of The Business Lounge, Brian actually documented his entire strategy in our private forum and other members replicated his process with amazing results. So, make sure you’re digging into the forum to see how our OG members like Brian implement smart strategies like this one.

Facebook Ads is something that I think everybody should be leveraging, especially if you’re already in the post revenue stage (meaning you’re already making money from your business).

If you run the right Facebook Ad campaign and you know how to optimize it, you could actually be adding people to your list for pennies. I’m talking like 30 to 40 cents per lead and you can get highly qualified people to join your list (not just cheap leads that will never buy from you).

Diving in and understanding Facebook Ads and experimenting with it is a really good idea, especially in this day and age.

It’s how we’ve scaled our business from six figures to close to seven figures and more is coming this year.

Those are the three long-term strategies that I use consistently and the three short-term strategies if I want to build my email list fast.

I hope that you find these strategies practical and that you’re able to implement them.

Let me know in the comments section below which one of these strategies are you going to be implementing right away to get to your first 1000 subscribers and beyond.
